2006 ACC Event, an Evening of Learning and Networking

Chinese American Heart Association (CnAHA) held its first meeting at Hsu’s Gourmet Chinese restaurant in downtown Atlanta during the American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Sessions on March 12th, 2006.  Twenty-five cardiovascular professionals from U.S, China, and Hong Kong attended the event. Dr. Leng Jiang, MD, Director, Non-Invaisive Cardiology, Baystate Medical Center kicked off the event with a brief introduction of CnAHA, followed by a roundtable discussion, networking, and general discussion on the future of the organization.

Roundtable Discussion on cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT)
Dr. Huagui Li, MD, PhD, an electrophysiologist (EP) from Cardiac Center of Creighton University discussed the state of the art of CRT in the US.  Dr. Paul Wang, Chief of EP service from Stanford University School of Medicine presented cardiac sudden death in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). He showed data in clinical trials that patients with CHF and left ventricular dysfunction can benefit from implantable cardioverter-defibrilator (ICD) and CRT. Dr. Shuping Ge, MD, a pediatric cardiologist from the Lillie Frank Abercrombie Section of Cardiology, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, gave his perspective for CRT in children with heart failure.  CRT does have benefit for this group of patients but the mechanisms still need further investigation.  Finally, Dr. Leng Jiang shared her thoughts on how to use echocardiography to identify CRT responders.

Dr. Navin Nanda, the founding president of our counterpart, American Association of Cardiologists of Indian Origin, joined us after the roundtable discussion to congratulate the inauguration of our association.  The Indian association was founded in 1986 with a handful of people.  Now it has grown to close to 2,000 members.  It offers scholarships and holds two events a year at ACC and AHA.  Dr Nanda said that they started off with a few members.  With the dedication of these people and recruiting efforts, the society grew like a snowball as more people with similar background and culture joined the association.  They found it very helpful for their professional growth, education, clinical work and research .
