CnAHA-ASE Meeting/Dinner

On June 7th, 2009 at Grace's Mandarin Restaurant in Washington, D.C,
the Chinese American Heart Association along with colleagues and
friends from all over the world gathered to enjoy a wonderful evening.

Dr. Gong-Yuan Xie, CnAHA Imaging Subspectialty Chair, opened the
meeting by welcoming participants and introducing Dr. Julio Perez,
Director of Echocardiography, from Washington University.  Dr. Perez
is an expert in Echo contrast and is an advocate for international
collaborations in research and education. His successful career is an
inspiration for physicians and researchers with Chinese origin, as Dr.
Perez was born and raised in Puerto Rico.

Dr. Michael Picard, Director of Echo from the Massachusetts General
Hospital and past-president of ASE, attended the dinner meeting as our
guest speaker.  Dr. Picard has trained numerous physicians with
Chinese origin, including Dr. Leng Jiang, Dr. Dali Fan and Dr. Cynthia
Taub, all of whom were present at the meeting.  He was pleased to see
all the talent and enthusiasm from CnAHA in cardiovascular medicine,
and urged everyone to become Fellows of American Society of
Echocardiography.

Dr. Shuping Ge, President of CnAHA, introduced the organization and
presented its current missions to our new members.  He strongly
encouraged member participation and volunteerism.

In spite of the swine flu pandemic, approximately twenty-five members
attended the dinner meeting.  Under a low-key and relaxed environment,
our members spent a lively evening with memorable discussions and
delicious food.   We look forward to seeing our colleagues from
mainland China during next year's ASE in San Diego.

In 70's Dr. Fontaine first recognized a distinct type of cardiomyopathy in mostly young and healthy individuals suffered with drug refractory ventricular tachycardia (VT) and named it arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). He first identified the critical zone of slow conduction in VT (concealed entrainment) in ARVD, the underlying cause of late potentials and Epsilon waves. He found that patients with ARVD (as well as other cardiomyopathies) are prone to inflammation (myocarditis), which has important prognostic implications. He first reported apoptosis in those older patients with ARVD progress to congestive cardiac failure. A new treatment can be dynamic cardiomyoplasty. Dr. Fontaine has more than 160 publications (including many book chapters) regarding the diagnosis and treatment of ARVD.
5. Recommendations for future Chinese ARVD studies (5 min)
  • Guest speaker―Frank Marcus, MD, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine, in Tucson, Arizona.
