Annual Report

2011 Newsletter

Dear CnAHA and ACRE members, colleagues, and friends,

Happy New Year!

On behalf of CnAHA, we wish you and your loved ones a very healthy, productive and joyous new year (of the Dragon).
 We thank you for working so closely with us last year and take this opportunity to share with you a brief annual report of our association and future plans.

 1.    CnAHA Membership
Our membership has reached a record high of 360 lifetime, regular and associate, registered members. The Election 2012-2013 has also been instrumental for accomplishment, thanks to the efforts of all of you, and our Election candidates.  What an achievement!

 2.    Finance
In spite of the expenditure for many US and international impactful activities and events that CnAHA organized or co-organized to increase our visibility, reputation and membership, our association is still in very sound and positive finance compared to last year.  A separate report will be presented to the Board for approval.

 3.    US activities in 2011:
Among the many successful US activities, here are a few:
1)    China Evening during Heart Rhythm Society (May 2011, San Francisco) co-organized by Chinese Medical Association and CnAHA;
2)    China Night during American Society of Echocardiography (ASE)(June 2011, Montreal, Canada) co-organized by CnAHA and ASE;
3)    Symposium “Era of Translational Medicine” co-organized by ACRE and CnAHA during AHA (November 2011, Florida);
4)    China Night co-organized by CnAHA and ACRE during AHA (November 2011, Florida)
5)    Annual Young Investigator Award during AHA (November 2011, Florida)
All these events were very well organized, attended, and complimentary to our members, friends and guests, thanks to the outstanding leadership and fund raising efforts of our organizers, Kudos.

 4.    International activities in 2011:
Many of us have attended many international activities on behalf of CnAHA, e.g. 1st Yangtze River International Congress of Cardiology (Chongqing), 5th Oriental Congress of Cardiology (Shanghai), International Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound (ISCU) and the Chinese Ultrasound Physicians Association (Wuhan), 3rd National Cardiovascular CME Seminar by Huashan Hospital/Fudan University (Shanghai), etc.
 In addition, a total of 13 CnAHA members attended the 21st Great Wall International Congress of Cardiology (GWICC, Beijing).  This is the 5th year CnAHA sponsored or co-sponsored Symposia in GWICC.  We have a full day (4 sessions) CnAHA sponsored symposia this year.  This is also the first year CnAHA worked with AHA to co-sponsored 3 sessions during GWICC, the first year for AHA in GWICC.  Due to this groundbreaking and other efforts via CnAHA, we were awarded “Outstanding International Collaboration Prize” by GWICC (the 3rd consecutive year).

 5.    Integration with ACRE
Tremendous efforts and significant progress have been made toward integration between CnAHA and ACRE.  We agreed that future close collaboration is a priority for both associations.  Future dual membership and leadership will be encouraged to bridge the gaps between basic science research and clinical medicine and to explore more productive collaborations in translational medicine/research amongst cardiovascular physicians and scientists with Chinese origin in the US and China.

 6.  New CnAHA structures
As an effort to strengthen CnAHA leadership structure to be more effectively meeting the needs of our rapid growth, advancing our missions, and increasing our impact and advocacy, the Board has discussed, vetted and approved:
1)    New CEO position
Grace Fu Palma, MBA is our new CEO and will be in charge of operations of the association.  Congratulations, Grace.  Among others, she has reviewed thousands of emails, and is instrumental in our Election.
2)    Advisory Board
An Advisory Board will be created to include world-renowned leaders in cardiovascular medicine and research to advise us.
3)    Board of Trustees
A Board of Trustees will be established to include major established academic, community, industry, and other leaders to meet annually or biannually to assist the President and Executive Board with bylaws, budget, and other major issues.
The Advisory Board and Board of Trustees will be announced with the New President at the beginning of the year.

 7.    CnAHA Election (Term 2012-2013)
We have seen a tremendous enthusiasm from our candidates and members for this election.  We believe we have an excellent group of candidates on the ballot.  We have spent a lot of time and resources in this election to make sure your voices are heard.  We hope you will visit our election webpage (http://www.cnaha.org) and cast your vote.  We thank you for your active involvement in this vital process to elect the best talents who will most enthusiastically serve CnAHA.

 8.    Transition to the new leadership
We are planning for a seamless transition to the new leadership in the beginning of 2012.  We will work diligently with the new President and the Executive Board to ensure the continuity of CnAHA leadership and missions.

Last but not least, we want express our sincere gratitude to our Board and each and every one of you for the opportunity for us to serve CnAHA for the last 3 years.   It has been an incredible journey of a lifetime to work with and for you.  CnAHA and you will have a very special place in our hearts.

Once again, best wishes for the New Year of the Dragon and we look forward to working with you in many years to come in CnAHA.

Cordially yours,
Shuping Ge, MD                                      Grace Fu Palma, MBA
